Negotiation is the important management skill for any Project manager as they spent most of their time in communication with stakeholders.<\/p>\n<p>Negotiations can occur at any point in the project&#8217;s lifecycle and can be formal or informal.<\/p>\n<p>Some basic negotiation skills are<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>High\u00a0Emotional Intelligence<\/li>\n<li>Good Listening and Communication<\/li>\n<li>Planning Negotiation Strategy<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Project Managers&#8217; Golden Rules to begin as a negotiator<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You don&#8217;t get what you deserve in business; you get what you negotiate for.<\/p>\n<p>Negotiation success is directly related to the amount preparation that precedes the negotiation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Prepare Ahead of Time and Know Exactly What You Want. You should have a communication plan before starting the negotiation.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Conflicts are inevitable in meaningful negotiation. People who want to avoid conflict is mostly the loser in any Negotiation.<\/p>\n<p>A good negotiation starts with building rapport with the other party.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Negotiation Processes<\/u><\/strong><strong><u>:<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The process of negotiation can be divided into the following phases:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Planning: The gathering of all relevant information required for the discussion.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Debate: The key issues are examined and discussed here.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Proposal: The development of the proposal as a solution to the problem presented<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Revision: This can include negotiating compromises prior to formalizing an agreement.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Achieving a Win-Win Outcome:<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Almost all negotiations yield the best results when both parties leave with a positive feeling about achieving their objectives i.e., is a win-win outcome.<\/p>\n<p>This ideal situation can be accomplished by the four keys:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Avoid focusing your negotiation on a single issue.<\/li>\n<li>Don&#8217;t assume you understand the other party&#8217;s requirements.<\/li>\n<li>Recognize that the other party does not have the same needs and desires as you.<\/li>\n<li>Believe point number two in your heart.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Some Successful Business Negotiation Strategies:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Be always ready.<\/li>\n<li>Listen and understand the issues of other party\u2019s issues and their point of view.<\/li>\n<li>Begin the negotiation by making a highball or lowball offer.<\/li>\n<li>Set a deadline for your offer.<\/li>\n<li>Be\u00a0respectful\u00a0and\u00a0professional\u00a0throughout\u00a0the<\/li>\n<li>Show that you&#8217;re paying attention by using mirroring.<\/li>\n<li>Body language can be used to send messages.<\/li>\n<li>Recognize\u00a0the\u00a0dynamics\u00a0of\u00a0the\u00a0deal.<\/li>\n<li>The best alternative for a negotiated agreement should be accepted.<\/li>\n<li>You\u00a0should\u00a0be\u00a0ready\u00a0to\u00a0&#8220;play\u00a0poker&#8221;\u00a0and\u00a0to\u00a0walk<\/li>\n<li>Avoid\u00a0using\u00a0the\u00a0unwise\u00a0tactic\u00a0of\u00a0&#8220;continuous\u00a0conceding&#8221;\u00a0when<\/li>\n<li>Don&#8217;t\u00a0focus\u00a0only\u00a0on\u00a0the\u00a0opportunity\u00a0in\u00a0front\u00a0of\u00a0you\u00a0and\u00a0ignore\u00a0other<\/li>\n<li>Don&#8217;t get too focused on a single issue.<\/li>\n<li>Determine\u00a0who\u00a0really\u00a0makes\u00a0the<\/li>\n<li>Never take a deal at face value<\/li>\n<li>Make\u00a0the\u00a0proper\u00a0inquiries.<\/li>\n<li>Create a Letter of Intent or Term Sheet to represent your agreement.<\/li>\n<li>Obtain the assistance of the best advisors and attorneys.<\/li>\n<li>Always create the initial version of the contract.<\/li>\n<li>Remember that time is the enemy of many deals.<\/li>\n<li>Always Strive for a win-win situation.<\/li>\n<li><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Negotiation in Project Management: Negotiation is a process by which people get into an agreement by avoiding arguments.
